Location: Sturgis, MI Publish Date: January 10, 2023 Department/Program: Education & Children's Services Roles and responsibilities of an Bus Driver include:
· Assist in classrooms when needed and follow classroom guidelines and rules regarding children, this includes meal prep and paraprofessional duties and responsibilities (when needed)
· Assist in the recruitment of children and families to our HS/EHS/GSRP programs.
· Comply with Agency’s Mission and Culture Statements.
· Comply with program and Agency policies and procedures.
· Comply with all traffic laws.
· Conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections, assuring all fluid levels are maintained, lights operate correctly, etc., and reporting any malfunction.
· Follow and enforce legally required child restraint device procedures, ensuring each one is properly positioned, secured, and cleaned.
· In the event of an accident, call 911, report incident to supervisor and complete accident reports.
· Maintain interior and exterior of bus in a clean and safe operating condition
· Prepare routes according to State Law and with approval of Director of Operations and Center Manager, to ensure children ride the bus for no more than the desired maximum time of one hour.
· Report any traffic violation that would jeopardize licensing or health problems that would affect driving performance.
· Responsible to safely transport children for outside classroom field trips.
· Responsible to keep assigned work area or classroom clean and assist in facility checks and miscellaneous housekeeping duties as assigned by direct supervisor.
· Transport children safely to and from ECS centers and their homes and/or designated drop-off points.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
· Hold a valid driver’s license and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record.
· Work is performed in a classroom setting and school environment where the noise level is moderate. The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. · While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk, bend, stoop and kneel, see and hear, use hands and arms to lift up to 60 lbs. and walk around the classroom, outdoor play area and school facilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION:
Education: This position requires a high school diploma or GED. Bilingual language speaking a plus.
Certification or Licensure: Must possess a valid CDL (Commercial Driver's License) with a "B" or "C" class and an "S" endorsement. A valid Michigan driver's license is required, and a driving record in compliance

with Community Action insurance carrier requirements and state law mandates. Must pass pre-employment health assessment and possess a Department of Transportation medical card.
Experience: Between six months and one year of experience is required.
Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
· Successful completion of a three day bus driving school course.
· Knowledge and skill necessary to the safe operation of a school bus in adverse driving conditions. Observance of safety and safe driving practices.
· Must have knowledge of state and federal regulations as they pertain to transportation issues.
· Intermediate to advanced level computer skills with experience in the Agency's software programs (Microsoft Office) required.
PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND JOB KNOWLEDGE:
· Demonstrates good judgment and decision making
· Participates in training opportunities in addition to required agency training.
· Reliability, dependability and attendance.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Employees within this classification are required to show:
· Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen upon hire and random screenings as needed.
· Criminal background investigation every five year or as needed.
· Pass a physical examination and Tuberculosis (TB) test with negative results upon hire.Current First Aid and CPR certification.
Employment is also subject to a 90-day introductory period.
